Dynasty value is not redraft value

In a redraft league every player is worth exactly what he produces this season. In dynasty he is worth what he will produce for as long as you hold him, which makes age the second most important input after talent. A 24-year-old and a 29-year-old with identical seasons are not close in value, and the market usually takes a year longer than it should to admit it.

Positions age differently, and this is where most dynasty mistakes are made. Running backs lose value earliest and fastest, receivers hold value into their late twenties, and quarterbacks in superflex leagues can hold value for a decade. Applying one aging curve to every position will cost you real value on both sides of a trade.

Running a dynasty roster

• Pick a direction: contending and rebuilding both work. Doing neither, holding aging talent while collecting picks, is the one approach that reliably fails.
• Sell a year early: the market pays for last season. The right time to move a producing veteran is while he is still producing.
• Rookie picks are currency: their value peaks in the months before the draft, when every pick is still a possibility rather than a specific player.
• Depth wins injuries: dynasty seasons are long, and the roster that survives October is usually the one with startable bench players rather than lottery tickets.
