Rookie drafts are the cheapest talent you will ever get

A rookie draft is the only time you acquire players at a price set before anyone knows what they are. That cuts both ways: the hit rate is low, and the ones that hit are the cheapest assets in dynasty because you paid a pick rather than a proven player.

Landing spot and draft capital carry more predictive weight than most managers want to believe. A player taken early by a team with an open role will get chances that a more talented player behind an entrenched starter simply will not. Opportunity is not the whole story, but in year one it is most of it.

How to draft rookies

• Weight draft capital: NFL teams commit snaps to the players they spent real picks on, and that commitment survives a slow start.
• Prefer an open role: a good player in a crowded backfield can lose a year to a committee. A decent player with nobody ahead of him will not.
• Position matters by format: in superflex a rookie quarterback with a starting job is worth more than almost any receiver in the class.
• Late picks are lottery tickets: draft for the outcome that would matter, not for the safest floor. A third-round rookie who becomes a bench player has done nothing for you.
