How to spend waiver budget

The waiver wire rewards being early far more than being right. A player claimed the week his role changes costs a fraction of what he costs a week later, and by then the people who waited are bidding against the box score rather than against the opportunity. This is why usage signals matter more than last week's points when deciding who to claim.

Spend big rarely and early. Most seasons contain two or three genuinely league-altering additions, usually created by an injury to a starter, and a roster that spent its budget on streamers in September cannot compete for them. Hold enough to win one auction outright.

What actually makes a pickup worth it

• A vacated role: the best claims are for players inheriting work that already exists, not players hoping to earn new work.
• Rising snap share: a climbing share is a coaching decision made visible. It precedes production rather than following it.
• Schedule: a streamer with three good weeks ahead is worth more than a marginally better player with one.
• Roster fit: a player who cannot crack your lineup is a bench slot spent on someone else's problem.
