Best ball is a portfolio, not a team

There is no waiver wire, no lineup to set and no trades, so every decision you will ever make happens during the draft. That changes what a good pick is. In a managed league you draft for a reliable weekly floor; in best ball your optimal lineup is chosen for you after the fact, so a player who scores nothing for six weeks and explodes twice can still win you a week you would otherwise have lost.

Ceiling therefore beats floor almost everywhere, and the players who look most frustrating to roster in a normal league, boom-or-bust receivers and backup running backs one injury from a full role, are exactly the ones best ball rewards.

Construction rules that actually matter

• Cover every week: bye weeks and injuries are not fixable later. A position where all your players share a bye is a guaranteed zero in that slot.
• Stack deliberately: pairing a quarterback with his own receivers raises the ceiling of the week they both hit, and that correlated spike is what wins tournaments.
• Diversify across entries: if you draft many teams, owning the same player everywhere means one injury sinks your whole portfolio. Exposure is a risk setting, not an accident.
• Late-round upside only: a safe veteran in the last rounds contributes almost nothing, because his good week is not good enough to make an optimal lineup.
