What the leaders list is actually showing

Season scoring totals reward availability as much as quality. A player who has appeared in every game will outrank a better player who missed three, and that is correct for describing what has happened but misleading for predicting what comes next. Read totals and per-game numbers side by side.

Points scored is also a backward-looking measure by definition. Its best use is spotting the mismatch between production and reputation: the player quietly sitting inside the top ten at his position who is still being treated as a flex option in your league.

Reading leaders honestly

• Per-game over totals: the fairer comparison whenever players have played different numbers of games.
• Check the scoring format: reception-heavy players move several places between PPR and standard, and the leaderboard is a different list in each.
• Touchdown dependence: a top-ten finish built on scores rather than volume is the least repeatable kind, and worth selling into.
• Recent form: a season total can hide a player who was excellent for a month and irrelevant since.
