What a dynasty trade is really pricing

A dynasty trade prices two things at once: how good a player is now, and how long he stays that way. Those pull in opposite directions, which is why the same deal looks like a steal to a contender and a disaster to a rebuilder. A value chart that ignores which of the two you are is only telling you half of what you need.

Draft picks make this harder, because a pick is an option rather than a player. It carries no injury risk and no aging, and its value peaks in the months before the rookie draft when it could still become anyone. That optionality is why picks feel expensive to buy and cheap to sell, and why the winner of a picks-for-players trade is usually decided by timing rather than by the chart.

Reading the numbers on a dynasty deal

• Age curves are positional: a 27-year-old running back and a 27-year-old receiver are at completely different points in their value arc. One curve applied to both will misprice half your roster.
• Consolidation costs a premium: turning three good players into one great one always looks like a loss on total value and is frequently a win, because only the great one starts every week.
• Superflex changes everything: quarterback values roughly double as an asset class, and a deal that is fair in one-quarterback can be lopsided in superflex without a single player changing.
• Rebuilders should take variance: if this season is lost, the young player with a wide range of outcomes is worth more to you than the safe veteran, whatever the numbers say.
