Quarterback is the most volatile fantasy position to draft because the gap between QB1 and QB12 is much smaller than RB1 vs RB12 — but the gap between QB1 and QB24 is huge in superflex. How you draft QB depends almost entirely on your league format.
In standard 1QB leagues, the top 5-7 QBs project within ~3 PPG of each other. The marginal value of taking Allen at pick 25 over Burrow at pick 60 is small — you're sacrificing a starting RB or WR for a tiny weekly upgrade.
The strategy: wait until the 8th-12th round, take a QB with rushing upside (Hurts, Daniels, Lamar) plus a streamer late. Top-12 QBs are usually replaceable on waivers in any given week.
Avoid: spending a top-5 round pick on a pure pocket passer. The opportunity cost of missing out on RB/WR depth is too high.
In Superflex, you start TWO QBs every week. Suddenly you need 24+ startable QBs across a 12-team league — and there are only ~20 of those in the NFL.
Take 2 QBs in your first 5 rounds, ideally one elite and one mid-tier with upside. Don't leave the early rounds with only one QB unless you have a clear path to elite RB/WR plus QB depth on waivers (rare).
A locked-in QB1 + QB2 is worth more than a slight RB or WR upgrade because the QB12-QB24 dropoff in SF is severe.
The biggest fantasy edge at QB comes from rushing volume. A QB who runs for 4-5 carries / 25 yards per game adds ~3 PPG over a pure pocket QB at the same passing volume.
Examples: Allen, Hurts, Lamar, Daniels, Anthony Richardson when healthy. These are your "ceiling" QBs.
Pure passers (Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert) are great but their floor is "average game" while rushing QBs add baseline points even on bad passing days.
In standard 1QB leagues, wait until rounds 8-12 unless an elite tier-1 QB (Allen, Hurts, Lamar) falls into round 5-7. Use early picks on RBs and WRs where positional scarcity is much steeper.
Only as a late-round handcuff strategy if you took a high-injury-risk QB or want bye-week coverage. Otherwise stream the QB position from waivers — it's usually free.
Superflex (where a QB can fill the FLEX slot) makes QBs the most valuable position. You should take 2-3 QBs in the first 6-8 rounds because top-24 QBs are scarce.
